Back in the day my boyfriend had a 1954 Chevy.
It had a record player mounted beneath the dash.
There was a Vibrasonic sound amplifier which gave a split second delay of the sound to the rear speaker with the end result of sound in an auditorium echoing off the walls.
Think of the sound in Little Stevie Wonder’s first hit playing the harmonica live in front of a crowd.
At one point he actually repainted it with individual cans of green paint!
Not to mention a sloppy shifter on the floor.
Is this why I went out with him?
We cruised, went to drag races, movies, beaches, parties, drive in hamburger joints,
Played those 33rpm records on the road.
Thought we were so "groovy".
All the while going over bumps in the road, the record would skip sometimes.

My point is a car is a personal choice.
Colors, models, wheels, accessories.
We thought his car was the coolest thing.
It was cheap, nothing was elaborate, and it got to places just fine, unless we ran out of gas.
Which was fifty cents a gallon.

TODAY

This is what I see!
No getting around it
BOLD VIBRANT FLASHY
Studying this car for the longest time, others walked on by.
The wheels on this thing were huge, my guess very expensive.
I shuttered to think of a car dent from open doors parked so close to it.
Or parking by a curb and not scraping those pretty shiny wheels up!

It seemed pretty peculiar to me.
Then I went back to my era.
Was the Chevy Sedan weird?
Is that why people use to look at us?
To each his own.
Most definitely I am not judging...

I like both, the new and the old. my first car at age 18, in 1962 was a 56 chevy and gas was 50 cents a gallon. i prefer the OLD gas price
my dream car would be a 1970 Chevelle SS - yup, an old muscle car. but i'm too practical and refuse to put money into something that provides transportation to me. i could never do the big rims and all as i'd always worry about people stealing it or damaging it.
Oh scan the picture, let's see!
Wow - not bad! :)
YES! People want to see that picture of you and "the" car! I love both cars. How fun. Those were the days but that new one looks awfully fun too.
Oh your boy friend sounds like he was a really cool guy!
Those wheels on the new car look a little frightening--like they could chew up a pedestrian and spit them out in the gutter!
Best,
Bonnie
Loved reading your comments! What a group you all are.
Bonnie, I really had to laugh at your comment. You put it so well! Chewing up people or whatever comes along.
glad you added you and the car, great shot of both. it looks very much like my dad's 53 pontiac, it was two tone green
hah!!! I would have dated that guy - the kicker would have been his car! I've never heard of this record player mounted beneath the dash. how could it not skip? but I bet it was a blast cruising around in that car. that's a pretty cool vintage photo of it too. thanks for sharing this blast from your past. it was fun. I hope you have a joyful weekend Janie2.
