Handcar Regatta Photos

Twisted Beard

Twists of hair a religion, a way of life, or style of expression.
Dreadlocks we refer to it.
Hindu, Greeks, Ethiopian, Judaism, even the very early Christians may have worn this style of hair on their heads and in their beards.
The first Bishop of Jerusalem wore his hair to his ankles.
However in this photo it is yarn, fake beard, a costume, with creative flair to display for the Regatta Festival.
I personally do not judge others for their hair styles.
Fashion, freedom of expression should be an option for people.
We all go through experimental times in our life to test ourselves.
I have had times of tangled hair, wind blown, full of dust on the deserts.
I can attest that I would never choose Dreadlocks for my way of life.
Tangled hair alone is painful!
This guy stood out in the crowd being colorful and that is what drove me over to get his photograph.
The fellow with the twisted pretend beard was enjoying his day and so was I.

In the crowd with a live band she never skipped a beat.
The young lady was in her groove, dancing alone and that was cool.
Imagine being in 90 degree heat, wearing the attire that that was well planned, the theme, and jiving under a parasol.
All eyes were on her, she was beautiful the way she carried herself.
I was not sure how this photo would turn out as I kept squeezing out photos hoping the motion and the light would hold up.
When her eyes were open she had a big smile on her face.
The thought came to me, what does this women do in the "real world"?
A mother, daughter, girlfriend or wife, student, working or not.
But for today she didn't have many cares.
Just that she loved dancing.

Today I attended the Handcar Regatta in Santa Rosa, CA.
In 90+ degree heat, nothing stopped people in their elaborate costumes.

Even me with my big floppy hat, there was lots of sweaty people.
I had never been to this event before, and hope to return.

Young and old, families, friends, children.
Wheelchairs, canes, strollers, parasols, misters and great food smells coming from the food vendors all around.
Pets included all breeds of dogs big and small, a few dogs were in strollers, one hairless rat, and one lady with a small kitten.
I met a lot of nice people that didn't mind me asking about their costumes.  The event reminded me of Burning Man.
With many of the art cars and art that had been out there this year.

I especially liked this painting above, created on a large wall board.  The details were intriguing, and I wondered how long this piece took in the studio to finish.

I will be adding a few other photos to this post later.

There were vendors, artists, musicians, stilt walkers.
The main attraction was handcar races on the railroad tracks.
Original cars made by the competitors.

Did you add in the top picture of the dancer? I don't remember seeing it when I looked here before. It's great.

What I'd like to know is how you get such a warmth and light to all your pictures. I'm not sure if it's the background to the blog which influences the way I see them . . . or the way you take them.

Thanks for posting the picture of the dancing lady. She really does look like shes enjoying herself and in her groove! I love it when a person has enough confidence to get out here in this world and just do what makes your soul tingle!

Lucy, no I did not add in the top of the dancer. I think what you are seeing is the black background of my blog color. The background of this photo was very busy with people and things. I must admit this was my first time I attempted to remove a background and then have the nerve to post it! I do not know a lot about photoshoping, I am self taught. I felt the dancer would stand out more with a black background. The warmth and light may come from a polarizing filter on my camera lens. Plus I did fix the levels and light with my editing software. The dancers face was dark from the shadow of her parasol. I am glad you enjoy my photos, I am honored. Thank you.
